A Small Wedding A Perfect Day – By Alicia Kapa

14 March 2026

On a beautiful sunny spring day, I became Mrs Saro!

They say that you shouldn’t expect your wedding day to be perfect as things go wrong. I don’t think those people either planned very well or maybe they were planning an extravagant fairytale wedding because our day was absolutely perfect and nothing went wrong.

We got married in a little chapel in the middle of town here in town. The chapel used to be for the catholic nuns but because of the earthquake the Council now looks after it. We loved the intimacy of the chapel as we wanted a small wedding with our closest family and friends so it was perfect.

Our bridal party photos were done at the Botanical Gardens after the ceremony. We had a lot of fun, although I was not expecting the heat as the day before we had a big storm so after a couple of hours at the gardens, I was very ready to get changed into my reception dress which was a lot lighter and comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, my wedding dress was my ultimate dream and I felt just like Taylor Swift in her sparkly princess dresses but after a few hours and a lot of sweating I was a little uncomfortable!! In hindsight I should have made sure I had a water bottle but hey I probably would have forgotten to drink anyway!

The reception was also in town and the food was absolutely delicious. We decided instead of having a cake that nobody really eats we had donuts from our favourite bakery! Safe to say that there was none left over. We danced and mingled and had a good time, we got farewelled at 10pm (I was very clear about that when we were planning because I knew I was going to be exhausted and didn’t want to lose my energy). Stee booked us a lovely room overlooking the city so we had a bottle of champagne and went to sleep. Our first meal was McDonald’s for breakfast which I think is absolutely cute because I feel like it sums up our relationship, fancy one minute then simple the next.

We spent 10 days resort hopping in Fiji for our honeymoon. All we did was eat, drink, tan, swim and sleep which was just bliss after such a busy time with the wedding and everything. Now we are settling in to life as husband and wife. Not a lot has changed to be honest but I am enjoying my new title as a wife!
